The Nokia 7.1 uses a coulomb-counter-based fuel gauge IC that was calibrated to the discharge curve of the original aged cell. A new cell has a flatter voltage curve and higher capacity, so the IC's internal model no longer matches actual cell behaviour. Under modem transmit bursts or screen-on GPU load, voltage drops briefly below the shutdown threshold even though the cell is not truly empty. Running one full discharge cycle — draining to automatic shutdown, then charging uninterrupted to 100% — forces the IC to relearn the curve and eliminates false cutoffs.
USB fast charge not activating on the first cycle after battery replacement
After a cell swap, the Nokia 7.1's charge IC sometimes stays in trickle-charge mode on the first plug-in, especially if the new cell arrived with a low state of charge from storage. The IC treats any cell below roughly 3.0V as a suspect or damaged cell and throttles current as a safety measure. Let the phone charge uninterrupted for at least 20 minutes on a standard 5V charger first — once the cell clears the pre-charge threshold, the IC re-evaluates and standard charge rates resume automatically.
