Optomed Smartscope M5 / M5 Pro — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (4/HR-4U AAA)
This 4.8V 700mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the OEM cell pack in the Optomed Smartscope M5 and Smartscope M5 Pro portable fundus cameras. It restores power to the device for clinical ophthalmic examinations when the original pack no longer holds charge. Voltage and capacity match OEM specifications exactly.

Why the Smartscope M5 flags low battery immediately after a confirmed full charge
The Smartscope's charge IC was calibrated against the original OEM cell's internal resistance profile. A fresh Ni-MH replacement cell starts with slightly higher internal resistance until it has been through at least one full charge-discharge cycle. The BMS interprets this elevated resistance as a depleted cell and trips the low-battery alarm even when state-of-charge is high. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle before clinical use and the BMS recalibrates — the alarm clears at 4.8V on the next full charge.
Device will not power on after the replacement battery sat in the box
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–3% per day in storage. If this pack sat for several weeks before installation, voltage may have dropped below the Smartscope's BMS recovery threshold — typically around 3.6V for a 4-cell pack. The BMS treats any input below this threshold as a damaged cell and blocks the power-on sequence entirely. Place the battery on charge for a full uninterrupted cycle first; the charge IC applies a low-current recovery charge that brings the pack back above threshold before switching to standard CC/CV charging.
