Panasonic JS-970 POS Series — 10.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (JS-970BT-010)
This is a 10.8V, 1600mAh Li-ion battery for the Panasonic JS-970 POS workstation line. It fits the JS-970, JS-970WP, and JS-970WS terminals. These units run in retail and hospitality environments where a failed backup battery means unprotected transactions during a power event.
- JS-970, JS-970WP, JS-970WS compatibility: All three variants share the same 10.8V backup rail, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. The battery management system on each model reads cell voltage and temperature from the same register set, so one cell fits all three without firmware differences.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge, discharge, and power-interrupt cycles on a JS-970WS. The BMS accepted the cell immediately, balanced the cells across all three groups, and the terminal reported battery status correctly in the system diagnostics screen.
- Post-install calibration on live POS systems: After installing this battery, run a deliberate power-loss test during a quiet trading period. The POS firmware recalibrates its runtime estimate against the new cell during the first full discharge cycle — skip this step and the terminal may report inaccurate backup capacity until calibration completes.
Why the JS-970 battery self-test fails immediately after replacement
The JS-970 runs an internal battery self-test that checks both cell voltage and charge state before returning a pass result. A freshly installed cell that has not completed a full float charge will sit below the threshold the firmware expects, triggering a fail flag. This is not a fault with the battery — it is the BMS waiting for the cell to reach a stable resting voltage. Leave the terminal on mains power for at least 24 hours before re-running the self-test. After that charge period, resting cell voltage should sit at or above 12.4V and the self-test will pass.
Receipt printer drawing the backup battery down faster than expected during outage
The thermal print head on the JS-970 is the highest single draw component on the backup circuit. During a mains outage, every receipt printed pulls a short but significant current spike from the battery. If the terminal is processing a queue of receipts when power drops, the cumulative draw can cut backup capacity faster than the system estimate predicts. To protect transaction data, configure the POS software to suspend receipt printing during outage mode and reprint from the transaction log once mains power is restored.
