This is a voltage cliff problem, not a capacity problem. Under high-load conditions — active LTE, screen at full brightness, or simultaneous app processing — the cell voltage drops faster than the fuel gauge IC predicts from its stored curve. When the cell voltage sags below the shutdown threshold, the phone cuts power even though the gauge still shows charge remaining. A full discharge-to-charge cycle after fitting the new cell lets the coulomb counter recalibrate its voltage-to-capacity curve. After one complete cycle, the reported percentage tracks actual cell voltage much more accurately.

Battery percentage jumping erratically after installation

Erratic percentage readings on the first day after a cell swap are caused by the fuel gauge IC referencing its old calibration data against the new cell's discharge profile. The two curves do not match, so the reported figure jumps as the IC loses tracking. This is not a faulty battery. Fully discharge the phone until it shuts off automatically, then charge uninterrupted to 100% — the IC resets its reference during this cycle. After that first full cycle, percentage readings should stabilise within ±3%.
