The modem radio and display together can pull enough current to cause a sharp voltage sag — the IC sees a reading below its cutoff threshold and shuts the device down, even though the new cell still holds charge. One full standard-rate discharge-charge cycle forces the coulomb counter to relearn the new cell's voltage floor, typically settling cutoff near 3.4–3.5V under load.
Phone warm near the battery during the first few charge sessions
A fresh high-impedance cell generates more heat than a broken-in one during the initial charging sessions. The charge IC on the Note 4 runs constant-current phase longer against a new cell because internal resistance is slightly higher out of the box. This is normal and typically settles after three to five cycles as internal resistance drops. If the device stays warm beyond the fifth cycle, check that the back cover is seated flush — trapped heat has no exit path through a misaligned cover.
