This is a voltage cliff issue, not a capacity problem. Under modem or display load, a new cell not yet profiled by the fuel gauge IC can drop below the BMS cutoff threshold — around 3.2V — faster than the reported percentage suggests. The phone interprets this as a hard fault and cuts power even though the gauge still reads 20–30%. One full slow discharge-to-charge cycle lets the fuel gauge map the actual discharge curve of the new cell, after which shutdown behaviour normalises.
Device not powering on after the replacement battery sat in storage
Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage, and if the voltage drops below approximately 2.5V per cell, the BMS enters a lockout state to prevent damage. The phone will show no response to the power button and no charge indicator on the screen. Connect the device to a wall charger — not a PC USB port — and leave it for 15–20 minutes before attempting to power on. Wall chargers deliver enough pre-charge current to wake the BMS; PC USB ports often cannot.
