Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
A freshly installed Ni-Cd cell that has been in storage for several months will sit below the charge controller's float acceptance window — typically under 5.4V for a fully charged 4.8V Ni-Cd pack. The Exiway charge controller interprets this as a fault state and holds the red LED. Leave the fitting powered on mains for 24 hours. Once the cell climbs above the acceptance threshold, the controller transitions to green automatically.
Emergency light dims or cuts out partway through a duration test
This happens when a new cell is tested before it has completed its first full conditioning charge. Ni-Cd cells do not reach rated capacity on the first cycle out of storage — internal resistance is elevated and voltage sags under load sooner than expected. The fix is straightforward: charge the cell on mains for a full 24-hour period before running any duration test. After one complete charge-discharge cycle, the cell stabilises and the fixture should hold lamp voltage above the 4.0V cutoff for the full rated duration.
