Sharp VL-Z5 / VL-Z3H Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT-L226)
This is a 7.4V, 1100mAh Li-ion cell built to replace the OEM BT-L226 battery in Sharp compact camcorders. It fits the VL-Z5, VL-Z3H, VL-Z300W, VL-Z300A, and over 40 additional VL-series models. Connector, dimensions, and BMS communication match the original pack exactly.
- VL-series platform compatibility: These Sharp camcorders share the same 7.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake across the VL-Z and VL-Z300 lines. One battery cell fits all of them because Sharp standardised the battery interface across this generation of compact camcorders.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a VL-series body. The BMS accepted the pack without error flags, the remaining battery indicator tracked the discharge curve accurately, and protection circuitry tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
- Camcorder BMS initialisation on first use: Perform the first full charge cycle inside the camera body or OEM charger — not a third-party generic charger. Some Sharp VL-series units need one complete in-body charge cycle before the battery-remaining display reads accurately on a new cell.
Why the VL-Z5 shows a dead battery indicator on a partially charged replacement cell
Sharp's VL-series battery indicator maps remaining charge against a voltage-threshold table calibrated to the original BT-L226 cell's discharge curve. A new third-party cell may have a slightly different discharge profile, causing the body to misread remaining capacity and show low or empty before the actual cell voltage drops. This is a calibration mismatch, not a faulty battery. Running one full charge-to-discharge cycle inside the camera body lets the BMS re-map its thresholds against the new cell and corrects the display.
VL-Z series body not recognising the replacement pack on first install
Sharp VL-series camcorders perform a BMS authentication check when a new cell is inserted. If the body shows no battery detected or refuses to power on, the cell has not yet completed an initial charge handshake. Remove the battery, reinsert it firmly, then place the camera in the OEM charger until the charge indicator confirms a full cycle. After that first complete charge, the body accepts the pack and powers on normally. If the issue persists after one full charge cycle, verify the battery contacts are clean and seating flush at 7.4V on a multimeter.
