About this replacement
Snow Joe iONMAX Snow Blower & Outdoor Tools — 40V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This 40V 4000mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the IBAT40 and IBAT40XR across Snow Joe's iONMAX cordless platform. It fits the iON18SB single-stage snow blower and a range of compatible 40V iONMAX models including the iON16CS chainsaw, iON16LM lawn mower, and iON13SS string trimmer. Capacity is rated at 160Wh — same voltage rail as the original.
- iONMAX platform compatibility: All listed models share the same 40V battery interface, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol — one battery pack works across the entire lineup without adapters.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran full charge/discharge cycles — the BMS held voltage steady under load and tripped the low-voltage cutoff cleanly without triggering a fault lockout on the tool.
- First charge before use: With Li-ion packs coming off storage, run a full charge cycle before the first use — this lets the BMS calibrate cell state-of-charge accurately from the start.
Cold-weather performance on a 40V snow blower
Li-ion cells lose available capacity in freezing temperatures — this is a chemistry limitation, not a defect. When running the iON18SB in sub-zero conditions, keep the battery indoors until just before use. The pack will perform closer to rated capacity when it starts warm. Store it indoors after each session, never in an unheated garage or vehicle overnight.
Tool powers on but cuts out under load — here's what's happening
If the snow blower starts but shuts off when the auger hits heavy, wet snow, the BMS is tripping on an overcurrent event — not a bad battery. The cells are drawing more current than the protection circuit allows under peak demand. Let the pack cool for five minutes, then re-engage at a slower feed rate. If it trips repeatedly, check that the pack contacts are clean and fully seated in the battery port.
