Sony's DCR-series bodies use a BMS authentication check on startup. The camera reads the cell's voltage at the moment of insertion and compares it against expected thresholds. If the resting voltage sits outside the expected window — common with a new cell that shipped at storage charge — the body rejects it before the communication handshake completes. Fix: place the battery in the OEM charger first, bring it to full charge, then insert it into the camcorder body.
Battery percentage jumping erratically on the DCR display
The DCR series maps remaining charge using voltage-threshold lookups tied to the discharge curve of the original NP-FP51D cell. A replacement cell with a slightly different internal resistance or discharge profile causes the indicator to jump — showing 60%, then 80%, then 40% within minutes. This is a calibration mismatch between the new cell's actual discharge curve and the camera's stored voltage map. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through the camcorder body to let the BMS recalibrate. After the second cycle, readings stabilise and track accurately to the 3.0V per-cell cutoff floor.
