- P588 and P588L shared cell: Both variants run the same voltage rail and use the same connector pinout and BMS handshake, so one cell covers both. The P588L is a regional variant with identical internal battery architecture — no electrical difference at the cell level.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the P588 platform and logged BMS communication. The protection circuit responded correctly to end-of-charge at 4.2V and engaged undervoltage cutoff at the expected threshold without fault flags.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: On first use after installation, disable fast charging and run one full discharge-charge cycle at standard rate. Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the P588 after a cell swap
This happens because the fuel gauge IC still holds the discharge curve from the old, degraded cell. When the new cell hits a voltage point the IC associates with a near-empty state, it signals the OS to shut down — even though usable charge remains. The modem and screen pull current spikes that accelerate the voltage drop past the IC's cutoff threshold. One full discharge cycle, draining to automatic shutdown and then charging uninterrupted to 100%, resets the coulomb counter to match the new cell and corrects the reported percentage.
USB charging not initiating on the P588 after battery replacement
If the replacement cell has been sitting in storage and dropped below approximately 3.0V, the BMS enters lockout mode and blocks charge current from the USB port. The phone will not respond to a cable and may show no charge indicator at all. Connect the device to a low-current USB source — a standard 5V/500mA port, not a fast charger — and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button. This allows the charge IC to trickle current past the BMS lockout threshold before the device attempts a full boot sequence.
