As this cell drops below approximately 3.5V under load, the TomTom XL IQ reduces power to the GPS receiver module to extend operation. An aged or deeply discharged cell develops higher internal resistance, which causes voltage to sag sharply under the load of the display and GPS receiver together. The device hits its hardware cutoff threshold — typically around 3.3V — while the fuel gauge still reads partial charge, because the gauge was calibrated to a healthier cell. The result is an abrupt shutdown that looks like a crash. Fitting a fresh cell and running two full charge cycles recalibrates the gauge and restores accurate low-battery warnings.
