Range dropping after a battery swap in a cordless handset

NiMH voltage sags under RF transmit load — the radio draws a short burst of current every time the handset communicates with the base. If the cells haven't been fully conditioned, internal resistance is higher, voltage dips further under that burst, and the handset reduces transmit power to compensate. The result looks like range loss but is actually a cell condition problem. After three to five full charge-discharge cycles, internal resistance drops and the sag narrows. Most users see range return to normal by cycle four.

Base station charge light not activating on a fresh NiMH pack

Cordless phone bases check cell voltage before starting a charge cycle. A new NiMH pack that has been sitting in storage can drop below the base's acceptance threshold — typically under 2.0V on a 2.4V pack. The base reads that as a fault and refuses to charge. The fix is a brief boost charge using a standalone AA NiMH charger to bring each cell above 1.0V, then return the handset to the base. Once voltage clears the threshold, the base resumes normal charging.
