- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on the VFW 525. The BMS communicated correctly with the phone's fuel gauge IC, accepted charge without error flags, and held voltage within spec across modem and screen load.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: Disable fast charging for the first complete discharge-charge cycle after installation. This allows the fuel gauge IC to map the new cell's discharge curve before high-current charging pushes current into an uncalibrated state — preventing erratic percentage readings early on.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on a replacement cell
A new Li-Polymer cell has a slightly different voltage-to-capacity curve than the original cell the fuel gauge IC was calibrated against. When the modem transmits or the screen peaks, load current spikes — and if the IC thinks 25% capacity remains but the actual cell voltage drops sharply under that load, the protection circuit trips and the phone shuts off. This is a calibration gap, not a defective cell. Run one full uninterrupted discharge down to automatic shutdown, then charge to 100% without interruption. After that cycle, the coulomb counter recalibrates and shutdown-at-percentage events stop.
Phone won't power on after the replacement battery sat in storage
Li-Polymer cells self-discharge during storage. If the cell drops below approximately 2.5V, the BMS enters lockout mode to prevent damage — and the phone appears completely dead with no response to the power button. Plug in a known-good charger and leave it connected for 15–20 minutes before attempting to power on; the charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell until voltage recovers above the BMS re-initialisation threshold. If the charging LED does not activate within five minutes, try a different cable — the issue is often the cable, not the battery. Target recovery voltage is 3.0V before the BMS will allow normal operation.
