Why the 14001 series flags a low-battery alarm on a fully charged replacement cell
The Welch-Allyn BMS uses a learned state-of-charge profile calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve. A new cell has not yet established that profile, so the BMS can misread cell voltage during the first cycle and trip the low-battery threshold early. This is not a fault with the replacement — it is the charge IC applying a conservative limit on an uncalibrated cell. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle before clinical use. After that cycle, the BMS recalibrates its threshold and the alarm clears on subsequent charges.
Device will not power on after the replacement cell sat in storage
Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If the cell voltage has dropped below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 6.0V for a 7.4V pack — the device will not power on because the BMS enters a protective lockout state. Place the battery on charge immediately after unpacking and leave it connected for a full charge cycle before attempting to power the device. If the charge indicator does not respond within 15 minutes, the cell may be below the dock's wake-up floor — remove, reinsert, and restart the charge cycle to prompt the recovery trickle-charge mode.
