The Highway Signs fuel gauge IC holds a discharge curve from the old, degraded cell. Under modem or display load, voltage sags briefly below the IC's stored threshold, triggering an immediate shutdown even though usable charge remains. Phone warm near the battery during first charge after replacement

A new Li-Polymer cell has higher internal impedance than a broken-in cell.
