Zebra QL220 / QL320 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (AT16004-1)
This 7.4V, 2200mAh Li-ion battery replaces the OEM pack in Zebra QL220, QL220+, QL320, and QL320+ mobile label printers. These printers run in retail stockrooms, warehouses, and logistics hubs where uninterrupted printing keeps operations moving. The cell matches the original voltage rail and connector so the printer's BMS accepts the pack without reconfiguration.
- QL220 and QL320 platform compatibility: The QL220 and QL320 share the same battery bay, connector pinout, and 7.4V BMS handshake. One pack covers both printer generations — including the Plus variants — without any adapter or firmware change.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through continuous print jobs on QL220 hardware and monitored the BMS response across full charge-to-cutoff sequences. The protection circuit held stable cutoff at the correct low-voltage threshold with no false trips during peak thermal draw.
- First-shift prep for mobile label printing: After installing this pack, run a full charge in the printer's cradle before the first print job. The print head and motor draw a combined inrush current that can trip the BMS if the cell starts near minimum — a fully charged cell prevents nuisance shutdowns at the start of a shift.
Why the QL220 shuts down mid-print on a new battery
The QL220 print head and paper feed motor fire simultaneously during a label print cycle, creating a short inrush spike that exceeds steady-state draw by a significant margin. If a new pack ships with a partial factory charge, the BMS can interpret that spike as an overcurrent event and cut power. This is a BMS protection response, not a defective battery. Charge the pack to 8.2V before the first print run to clear this condition.

A charging error on the cradle display almost always comes from contact resistance at the battery terminals, not a fault with the pack itself. Dust, label adhesive residue, and handling oils all accumulate on the gold contacts on both the battery and the cradle dock. Wipe the battery contacts and the cradle contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat the pack firmly until you hear it click. If the error clears within 30 seconds, contact resistance was the cause — the pack is fine.
